TI's New Power Mux Family Simplifies Switching Between Battery and External Power Sources in Single-Cell Li-Ion Applications
New Multiplexers Reduce Voltage Drop to 0.05V
DALLAS, Feb. 6 -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE: TXN - News; TI) today introduced a family of ultra-low rDS(on) power switches that enables seamless transition between two power sources, such as a single-cell lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery and a wall adapter. Ideal for mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other handhelds, the controlled output voltage transition times of the new devices allow for a seamless supply transition without requiring a large output (hold-up) capacitor. Designers of mobile applications can now achieve a voltage drop of less than 0.05V at 300mA for higher efficiency and longer battery life, compared to the 0.3V - 0.7V drop seen in a typical two-diode "OR" connection implementation. (See: power.ti.com/sc03030.)
Designed to maximize power efficiency, TI's TPS211x family of two-input, one-output power multiplexers has two internal high-side power metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) with rDS(on) as low as 84mOhms typical (TPS2111/3/5) to 120mOhms typical (TPS2110/2/4).
The series of devices, which operates from 2.8V to 5.5V and delivers up to 1A, offers a comprehensive set of features and options to simplify design and provide added flexibility. Select devices have manual switching capabilities using the D0 and D1 control lines, as well as an "autoswitching" mode where the switchover is automatically set to the higher input voltage, or determined by a voltage threshold set by an external resistor divider if the device features an adjustable threshold.
Additional Features:
- Low Standby Current (0.5 uA Typ)
- Low Operating Current (55 uA Typ)
- Switch Status Output Option
- User-Programmable Current Limiting from 0.31A to 1.25A
- Thermal Protection
- Inrush Current Control
Cross-Conduction and Reverse-Conduction Blocking
