Philips Introduces Semiconductor Industry's First Wireless Multi-Service Residential Gateway Reference Design

Royal Philips Electronics, today announced the semiconductor industry's first wireless broadband residential gateway reference design to support both 802.11b and DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) communications standards, making the connected home a reality. The new Philips reference design, the PTD2754, will allow manufacturers of broadband routers and gateways to provide consumers in the home and small office/home office (SOHO) environment with secure, wireless data communications and cordless VoIP (Voice over IP) via a single broadband connection.

The PTD2754 incorporates multiple applications in a single reference design, including router, NAT (network address translation), VPN (virtual private network), 802.11b access point, Firewall, VPN, VoIP and DECT. The new reference design will make it possible for manufacturers of SOHO routers and residential gateways to quickly design a variety of products that allow consumers to connect multiple wireless electronic devices and multiple cordless handsets for up to four separate VoIP phone numbers.

The PTD2754 is a turnkey solution that provides developers of wireless gateways the industry's most versatile and comprehensive hardware and software tools in a single reference design -extending cost savings and time-to-market advantages. The solution offers a one-stop resource for developers, allowing them to speed the delivery of next-generation cable/DSL routers and advanced, multi-service (voice and data) gateways to meet the growing residential demand for broadband services and wireless connectivity.

"With the addition of the PTD2754 broadband router reference design to our portfolio of technologies, Philips is now the only company to have available a complete silicon, printed circuit board and software solution, integrating data, voice and security with cordless and wireless connectivity for residential and SOHO environments," said Hamid Butt, general manager business line broadband access, Philips Semiconductors. "Philips is dedicated to providing total system solutions in order to help our customers lower cost, simplify manufacturing and deliver innovative products."

End-user demand for broadband networking is growing steadily as consumers look to connect their data, voice and entertainment networks, according to research from analyst firm In-Stat/MDR. The firm forecasts that this demand will drive total networked connections shipped in 2006 to 109 million. Innovative technology, such as that from Philips, will help spur the growth of broadband networking into the mainstream market.

Broadband Residential Gateway Reference Design Features
Numerous options for connectivity are included in the reference design for a versatile design approach, taking advantage of Philips' wide variety of semiconductor connectivity solutions. Targeted at broadband applications in the home and SOHO environment, the hardware portion of the reference design offers connectivity solutions such as wireless 802.11b, 10/100BaseT Ethernet, USB 2.0 host and client, corded voice (FXS and FXO), and cordless voice DECT base station and handset. The Philips gateway-on-a-chip software included with the PTD2754 reference design provides a complete Linux-based system solution including routing, embedded management, wireless access point, NAT, Stateful Packet Inspection Firewall, VPN, VoIP signaling and processing. .

Availability

The PTD2754 reference design is offered in combination with a development kit that includes Philips gateway-on-a-chip software. The PTD2754 is available immediately. For more information, please visit www.semiconductors.philips.com/markets/networking/broadband_access/
